Weymouth Celebrates 75th Anniversary of VE Day

75th Anniversary of VE Day

This unique National Bank Holiday weekend in Weymouth, will remember the contribution of British, Commonwealth and Allied armed forces personnel; those who contributed to the war effort and safeguarded the Home Front. As well as marking the Allies’ victory in 1945, the Bank Holiday will serve as an opportunity to pay tribute to those who have served and continue to serve in the UK Armed Forces and their families.

Make this an extra special Bank Holiday weekend, and stay in Weymouth, which has an excellent variety and choice of eating venues and buzzing pubs all within a few minutes walk from the events and the Gloucester House Bed and Breakfast.

Weymouth Town Council will be hosting a Concert on Weymouth Beach to celebrate this special VE Anniversary. Live music and entertainment will take place from a temporary stage which will be located on the Beach opposite Alexandra Gardens.

Bands and Choirs will undertake performance from 12 noon to 9.30 pm on the Friday and Saturday and from 11 am to 4.30 pm on the Sunday.

Prior to the weekend, a special Dad’s Army on Stage Play will take place at the Weymouth Pavilion. Performed by Project Play evening shows from 4th to 7th May daily. All proceeds from collections will go to Help for Heroes Charity.

The Nation’s Toast

3 pm is the time Winston Churchill officially announced the end of WW2 from the Cabinet Office, London. All public houses are being encouraged to ask their patrons to raise a glass to the Heroes of World War II at 3 pm.

Ringing out for Peace

Bells in churches and cathedrals will ring out at 7 pm in a collective celebrations of VE Day 75.  The sound of church bells is deeply rooted in British Culture.  They provide the grand soundtrack to our historic moments, calling us to wake, to pray, to work, to arms, to feast, to celebrate and, in times of crisis, to come together.
